2009 Congress Scholarship Winner Announced

The 1st Annual Stephanie McMahon Memorial Scholarship for the 34th Annual ONS Congress has been awarded to Paula Eubanks!  Paula is a new member to GPC-ONS this year.  She currently works at the Hillman Cancer Center having relocated to the Pittsburgh area recently.   We will look forward to reading reviews of programs that she attends at Congress this year in an upcoming edition of the newsletter!

GPC-ONS Receives Grant from ONS Foundation

The GPC-ONS Chapter has been awarded a $3750 grant from the ONS Foundation to coordinate a community oriented breast cancer educational program.  GPC-ONS will partner with the American Cancer Society to enhance breast cancer screening in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas.

The program involves training Parish Nurses from Pittsburgh and surrounding counties on the importance of breast cancer screening and to provide them with the education to take back to their local parishioners and ultimately increase screening for breast cancer.

Lawrence Wickerham, MD and Margaret Rosenzwieg, PhD, CRNP-C, AOCN will provide content to the Parish nurses on breast cancer risk, screening, and a treatment overview.  We will also plan to have vendors available to discuss screening resources and take-home information available to the attendees.  Finally, the program will look at how to minimize barriers to screening and discuss the best strategies to overcome this issue.

This program is currently scheduled for February 7, 2009 to coincide with a meeting of the Parish Nurses Association.  If you know a Parish Nurse in your community, spread the word about this terrific program.  Contact Patti Patterson or Kristin Baileys for more information.

GPC wins Chapter Grant from ONS Foundation

ONS FOUNDATION CHAPTER GRANT WINNER 2008-2009

GPC-ONS was the recipient of one of 10 chapter grants awarded at the ONS Mentorship Weekend in July!  Chapters were invited to submit a grant for a project that would support research, education, or leadership development.

Our chapter submitted "Care for the Oncology Nurse Caregiver:  Paying it Forward".

How many times have we heard each other say…”I’m too busy to take a break” … even to meet basic needs for nutrition, rest, or elimination?  Caring for self is one of the most important things that one can do for oneself, but all too often, oncology nurses place themselves last on the list when it comes to therapeutic care.   Maintaining a health sense of work/life balance is essential to support life-long engagement in this challenging profession.

As oncology nurses, we have learned about the healing benefits of complementary therapies for our patients.  Many nurses, however, may not have had the opportunity to practice or experience some of these healing therapies.  The $1000 grant from the ONS Foundation will be used to support an evening of yoga demonstrations, relaxation therapy, chair massage, and journaling exercise for oncology nurses from all practice settings.  The program will be offered in conjunction with Gilda’s Club of Western Pennsylvania.  The program goal will be to provide opportunities for oncology nurses to “receive” the gifts of healing offered by these complementary therapies and to “pay it forward” by sharing these concepts with their patients.

Chapter presidents across the country selected our proposal as "THE PEOPLE's CHOICE" and we received an ADDITIONAL $250 to support the program!

We will follow up with the chapter members who attended the program to see how they chose to "PAY IT FORWARD".
